Equity in Transit

It is no surprise that systemic racism had an influence on how and where roads, railways, and public transit systems were built as well as the significant underfunding of public transit systems in minority neighborhoods. This obviously resulted in fewer services, lower quality, longer wait times, overcrowded buses, and a lack of decision-making power on overall street design. Data shows that Black New Yorkers have a 25 percent longer commute time than white commuters. In addition to the inequity, we have all seen and experienced the MTA's dilapidated infrastructure, from train delays to flooding during heavy rain.

  1. Implement a monthly option for the OMNY!

  2. Reform NYC's paratransit system by reducing administrative burdens and streamlining application processes, which can reduce MTA operating costs.

  3. Expand the MTA’s pilot program for on-demand paratransit services.

  4. Create a focused capital plan for retrofits, upgrades and resilient infrastructure.

  5. Make all stations ADA-accessible and right-size infrastructure to improve pedestrian flow and reduce congestion.

  6. Develop a study to identify any state or city laws and regulations that lead to an increase in MTA capital costs, with recommendations for legislative changes to reduce costs.

  7. Hold the city accountable to developing specific street designs for commercial corridors to optimize pedestrian experiences and necessary vehicle access. Also, create street designs and optimize bus routes in areas near senior centers, Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs), NYCHA, and one- to two-family homes.

Truth is: we can't do this without your support!
